Two suspected militants stabbed and
wounded two Austrians and a Swede at a hotel in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Hurghada
today, according to a statement by the ministry of interior.
The two assailants entered the outdoor
restaurant at the front of the Bella Vista hotel and attacked the tourists.
Both attackers were armed with knives and pellet guns. Security forces opened
fire at the two assailants, killing one and severely injuring the other, the
ministry also revealed. The dead attacker has been identified as a 21-year old
student from Giza, a neighborhood in Cairo.
All three wounded tourists were taken to the
hospital, where one has been treated and discharged, there is currently no update
on the condition of the other two.
Consequently, the Hurghada assault is
likely to further affect Egypt’s tourist industry, which was badly hit after
the downing in October of a Russian passenger plane over Sinai that killed all
224 people on board.
