British singer, song writer and Instrumentalist,
David Bowie past away yesterday, Sunday 10 January 2016 after secretly battling
cancer for 18 months.
“David
Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18
month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask
that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” read a
statement posted on the artist’s official social media accounts.
The
influential singer-songwriter and producer dabbled in glam rock, art rock,
soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic
40-plus-year career. He just released his 25th album, Black star, Jan. 8, which
was his birthday.
In 1975, Bowie, born David Robert,
achieved his first major American crossover success with the number-one single
“Fame” and the hit album “Young Americans”, which the singer characterized as
“Plastic Soul”. The sound constituted a radical shift in style that initially
alienated many of his UK devotees.
He
also carved out an acting career including his role as an alien seeking help
for his dying planet in Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976.
He
did a three-month stint as The Elephant Man on Broadway in the 1980s.
Bowie
also starred in Marlene Dietrich’s last film, Just a Gigolo (1978), and played
Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).
